Background and Experience
Mobarn Røsandåsen kindergarten is a public general education located in the countryside, on an island called Averøy in Norway. In our municipality there are eight different kindergartens around the island, there are two primary schools and one secondary school. It lives approx 5 849 people in our municipality.
In our kindergarten there are currently 51 children in preschool groups, aged 1 to 6 years. We have three groups in our kindergarten, where the children are divided into groups according to their age: 1-2 year-olds in one group, and two groups with children in the age of 2-6 years. There are 5 preschool teachers and 7 teachers’ assistants in the preschool groups altogether. We have a preschool group with only the 5-6 year-olds, those who will start primary school, twice a week. They will be our target group in this project. In this group there are 2 preschool teachers sharing the work. This group is working one session a week with educational tasks in an activity booklet that contains topics like “myself”, “pattern”, “geometric shapes”, “measurement”, “numbers”, “placement”, “sorting”, “syllables”, “rhyme”, “symbols” and “letters”. All the preschool kids in the age of 5-6 years old in our municipality are
working with this preschool activity booklet, the last year in kindergarten before they attend primary school.
Once a week they are on a trip outside the kindergarten in the surrounding area. We have different hiking areas we use to go to. The children learn by actively participating, doing and researching their surroundings in the nature. While we (the preschool teachers) associate topics we work with in sessions inside, to the outdoor sessions. We also have a common topic planned by the preschool teachers for at least one month for all the children in the kindergarten. The topics are taking into account the seasons and national or traditional festivities, as well as the childrens development and interests.
The children in our kindergarten comes from the local area – also from socially disadvantaged and low-income families. We have National scheme for reduction in parental payments and free core time for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5 year-olds (right to receive 20 hours of free stay in daycare per week) for those with low income. We serve two meals per day, lunch and fruit meal. They bring lunch box with breakfast from home.
